<Food&Beverage Industry in Hong Kong>

For the 12 years leading up to 2016, Hong Kong has been a top destination for Japanese imports of agriculture, fishery, forestry, and food products. Of the 17,000 dining establishments in Hong Kong, 1,300 offer Japanese cuisine, and have become a fierce competitor when lined up with other foreign foods. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), 1.8 million people of Hong Kong (a fourth of the population) have traveled to Japan and experienced authentic Japanese cuisine. Therefore, Washoku is becoming more important to the hearts of the people of Hong Kong.

As a result, Hong Kong not only has well-known Japanese cuisine such as sushi, but also kushiage, tsuke-men, and other specialized restaurants.

<Diversity of Foreign Cuisine and Restaurant Boom>

In recent years, along RMB depreciation and cross border e-commerce, the number of Chinese tourists traveling to Hong Kong for shopping has decreased, and sales have also decreased 8.1% in 2016 compared to previous years, which affects many areas. On the other hand, restaurant sales have increased by 2.9%. Of all 89 new international brans hitting the Hong Kong market in that same year, 2/3 were for food products, introducing new foods and flavors to the public. Additionally, with the withdrawing of high-fashion jewelry brands and other such vendors from shopping malls, the room for growth in the food and beverage industry has been predicted to further increase.
