In March, 2018, a chef was hired through Washokujob's services to work in Hong Kong. And in June of that year, I had the opportunity to join him for a day. I enjoyed taking the central ferry from Hong Kong, visiting the remote island Cheung Chau for my visit about 35 minutes later.

Photographed is one of the beaches in Cheung Chau.

【About the Chef】
While we can't disclose any personal information, he is a Japanese man in his early 40s. After graduating high school, he entered the culinary world and has been working as a chef for 20 years. His father was also a chef, which is what motivated him to pursue a culinary career as well. And his children will grow up with the same inspiration.

Upon graduating, he began working at a major restaurant in Kansai, where he handled grilled, fried, and boiled foods, gaining the basic skills of traditional Washoku. He even transferred to a sushi restaurant to learn the proper way to make sushi. Wanting to further his career in the competitive Tokyo environment, the head chef appointed him as manager, where he experienced what it means to run a successful business. He worked so hard that he once collapsed and had to be hospitalized. After that, at a friend's invitation, he became a head chef at a restaurant in Hokkaido. With all of these accomplishments, he felt the next step in his career as to try working abroad. That's when he registered with Washokujob and found a new career in Hong Kong.

【Washokujob's Opinon on the Chef】
・ He is very sincere and polite: He corresponded quite amiably with all of the Washokujob staff, and politely and promptly answered all necessary questions throughout the recruitment process. And now his new employer commends him on the same exact thing. ・Prompt Cooperation: This chef understands the important of Washokujob's support when it comes to having to transfer jobs abroad. He fully took in everything Washokujob had to say and also corresponded promptly to make our staff's jobs easier, too. ・A Passion for Learning: He is very passionate about studying not only culinary arts, but Cantonese and English as well.

【A Day in Hong Kong】 This chef loves Bruce Lee, and wanting to make the most of his time in Hong Kong, he spends a lot of his vacation studying language. Hearing that he doesn't get out often, I decided to take him out sightseeing!

First, we planned to go see a statue of Bruce Lee. The chef felt inspired by the statue, and even tried to copy Bruce Lee's pose for a photograph!
After that, we decided to visit a remote island called Cheung Chau.

【Costs】(Based on 6/2018 exchange rate)

From the central ferry port, you take ferry no. 5 to Cheung Chau:
 Sunday/Holidays: Normal HK$16.70/26.00 Rapid HK$32、(234/365JPY、449JPY)
 Mon-Sat Normal: HK11.30/17.80 Rapid: HK$22.20(159/250JPY、312JPY)

When you think of Hong Kong, you might picture crowded, towering skyscrapers, but this remote island had nothing of the sort. We arrived in Cheung Chau after 35 minutes and worked up an appetite. We entered a nearby restaurant with local noodles and had coffee, pineapple juice, sauteed rice noodles, wanton soup, and fish dumplings for about HK$130 (1,825JPY) We took a walk afterwards and also enjoyed some chicken wings (15 for HK$35, 491JPY)

After walking around for 45 minutes, we also visited a nearby cave. It was my first time! The entrance was quite narrow, and it was a bit scary trying to get inside while holding on tightly to the rock walls. It's free, and you can use your cellphone light to see inside, or buy a lantern at the entrance for HK$30 (421JPY)

After walking for a bit more, we took a picture at the beach by the mountains. It was truly breathtaking to see. We arrived back around 6pm.

For the entire day, I spent: HK$151.9(2,133 JPY)

【In Closing】 The chef said this to me: Are remote islands this fun?! I've enjoyed my time working in Hong Kong and meeting new people, but this was an entirely different kind of joy! Plus, it was so affordable! I don't eat out often because we have meals in the restaurant, but I enjoyed eating out and learning that travel isn't so expensive! Thank you for inviting me!

I'm happy to know he had a nice time, and that he and I were able to have this experience thanks to meeting through the Washokujob platform where he also got this great new jobs.
